The Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History, located in the heart of Downtown Santa Cruz, is an absolute delight to the senses for people of all ages. There is always something interactive and surprising in their exhibits. The focus is generally on local artists and historical events, like the legendary Santa Cruz artist Jim Phillips, creator of the iconic Screaming Hand, best known for his surf and skate art. You will learn something unexpected in the ongoing History of Santa Cruz County gallery, starting with the indigenous habitants, traveling through the local industries that brought worldwide attention to our area, and featuring photos and stories from the 1989 earthquake, and so much more. Currently the Out of the Ashes: Stories from the CZU Lightning Complex Fires is a touching and captivating look back on the fires of last summer.
They have a very affordable $10 general admission rate, and children under 5 are free! They often have special events and free kids’ days with educational crafts!
After your visit you’ll be sure to find a delicious lunch or refreshment in Abbott Square Market, with a wide selection of restaurants, coffee shop, and full bar with exciting craft cocktail offerings.
